
We MUST Do Better
When Outsell first started we were a predominantly female-led company for many years. We then migrated more to a 50/50 split which was a balance I recall fondly. I felt like the chemistry of different nationalities on our leadership team combined with a 50/50 split male/female ratio was optimal. And then we had three of our most senior women retire over the past several years and now I’m finding that we have a smaller leadership team of 3 which is 2/3 male and 1/3 me! And I can see how the too ‘male’ orientation of my team now mirrors our too ‘female’ orientation of when we were predominantly female. In a way, I guess you could say I’ve experienced or am experiencing all flavors of balance and imbalance and I’m looking forward to adding another woman onto my leadership team soon which will get us back to 50/50 which is really, from where I sit, the best of all. Having lived through different eras over the past 20 years I can see the pros and cons of gender diversity in the C-suite and am committed to ensuring we maintain that balance.
I’ve given you the companies that have balanced C-suites, with 40–60% splits between female and male — below are the companies that are resting at the bottom of the 2018 list, with 90–100% male C-suites. We must do better — its essential when attracting and retaining talent as well as demonstrating that there is a career path for all aspiring leaders.
